Are you more likely to get ovarian cancer if you use HRT?
A new study carried out by the Lancet, a medical journal in th U.K. has shown an increased risk of developing ovarian cancer in women who use HRT (hormone replacement therapy). It also showed that the affected women were more likely to die from the disease than women who were not on HRT. This was reported from results of the million woman study, the largest study of its kind in the world representing about a quarter of all women aged 50-65 in the U.K. This is in addition to an increased risk of breast and endometrial (uterine) cancer also reported by the same study. The increase in risk was evident irrespective of the type of conventional hormone therapy that was used.
On the other hand some may argue that some of the benefits of using traditional HRT outweigh the risk and also saves lives. The researchers do suggest that women who decide to take HRT do so for very good reasons and for the shortest possible time.
