Menstrual Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS)- new tampon to reduce risk
A new tampon that will reduce the risk of developing menstrual Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) will soon be on the market.
Toxic shock syndrome occurs when a bacteria found commonly in menstruating women overgrows, producing some poisonous chemicals called toxins. These toxins are released into the blood where they cause the blood pressure to drop so low that vital organs in the body lose their blood supply. This can eventually lead to death .
Menstrual TSS is more common with the older super absorbent tampons than the ones on the market now. Today, women are advised to use the lowest absorbency that takes care of their menstrual flow and to remove their tampons after a maximum of 8 hours.
Unfortunately, menstrual TSS is still a problem. Recent research has shown that tampons which are coated with a special substance that reduces production of the toxins that cause menstrual TSS, a relatively simple solution that can save lives.
According to Johnson and Johnson who will produce the new tampon, it should be available “in the near future”.
